Dr. Zergabachew Asfaw MD, FACP
Dr. Zergabachew Asfaw has been practicing medicine for over Thirty years in Bronx New York. He graduated from Addis Ababa University as a Doctor of Medicine in 1979 and as a young graduate, he served as a medical director of St Mary hospital in Axum, Tigray, and northern Ethiopia when Eritrean Liberation Front and Tigray Liberation Front were fighting against the Ethiopian Military rule of Mengistu Haile Mariam. In the early eighties, he completed postgraduate studies in medicine and pursued research career that enabled him to travel to different parts of Ethiopia.
In 1989, he came to Yale University School of medicine as Fogarty International Fellow. He opted not to return to Ethiopia because of political turmoil in the country and chose to pursue his medical career here in the United States. He completed his postgraduate studies in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and has been serving in the Bronx, New York for over thirty years.
He is particularly interested in the care of elderly patients and those with dementia and cognitive disorders. Has had severed as an executive board member of Montefiore Medical center, the main teaching hospital of Albert Einstein college of medicine. He still serves as a senior attending physician in the same hospital.
He owns a medical practice named AZ medical services p.c. located in the Bronx. He has been serving as a medical director of multiple Skilled Nursing Facilities in New York. His passion is introducing innovative ideas in medical care and introducing progressive health care service design and thinking. He has committed himself to support health initiatives in his homeland Ethiopia. He has a brighter vision and optimistic views about development processes in Ethiopia and has unwavering desire and conviction to contribute on the process.
He is a fellow of American College of physicians and member of numerous professional organizations, which include American Medical directors’ Association, American Geriatric society. Through his private practice he has been promoting wellness, preventive services that emphasizes chronic disease prevention and management in order bring about successful aging. He has a published his autobiography entitle; Gamachu and Mindfulness: A Physcicians Journey The following books are under publication by author1. Honored: Pioneer Ethiopian Health professionals 2. Wellness and aging. Ways to strive not to survive. The inside cover lists his services.
He serves as the president and founding member of the Hakim Warqunah and Melaku Beyan Society for International Development, an organization founded by Ethiopian medical professionals residing in North America. This organization has become a link between diaspora physicians and medical institutions in Ethiopia.
Dr. Asfaw has traveled widely and lives in Pomona, New York.
